Meet the Io Moth – a handmade art doll inspired by the striking Automeris io moth.

With its warm golden-yellow wings, bold eyespots and soft, fuzzy body, the Io Moth is one of the most instantly recognizable moths. I wanted to capture that wonderfully unusual look in a small, tactile companion.

I carefully handcraft the wings from oven-bake polymer clay, recreating the distinctive patterns and large eyespots by hand. No painting goes into the wing design – instead, each detail becomes part of the clay itself. I finish the eyes with varnish to give them their characteristic glossy, textured appearance.

The body combines a soft outer layer with a sturdy felted core, giving the moth a satisfying weight and softness while keeping it durable enough to handle and carry with you. Meanwhile, a steel wire base supports the sculpted legs and lets you gently reposition them.

A strong neodymium magnet inside the body lets the Io Moth perch on magnetic surfaces such as lamps, shelves or mirrors. For non-metallic surfaces, the included steel mounting plate has an adhesive backing.

Like all my moths, this is not a fragile display piece that has to stay safely behind glass. Instead, it is a handmade moth art doll made to be held, moved around, taken with you and simply kept nearby.

The Io Moth makes a lovely choice for moth lovers, insect collectors, nature enthusiasts and anyone looking for an unusual handmade companion with a little bit of wild character.
Because I handcraft every moth individually, small variations are a natural part of each one’s character.
